The United States regrets that the May 26, 2013 elections in Equatorial Guinea were a missed opportunity for further democratization. Although voting occurred in an orderly and peaceful manner, the United States has serious concerns related to the election including arbitrary detentions, limits on the freedom of assembly and speech, and severely restricted access to the media and the internet/social networks for opposition parties.
We are aware that members of the opposition have questioned the accuracy of the results released by the government. We urge the government to maintain an open dialogue with opposition parties, and to address the legitimate concerns that they have about this and other electoral issues.
Elections and democracy are about more than just election day. Establishment of an independent electoral commission to oversee the preparation and conduct of elections and agreement by all parties on election processes, funding, and oversight would increase the credibility of future elections in Equatorial Guinea.

Estados Unidos lamenta que las elecciones de 26 de mayo de 2013 en Guinea Ecuatorial hayan sido una oportunidad perdida para una mayor democratización. Aunque la votación se desarrolló de manera ordenada y pacífica, los Estados Unidos tienen serias preocupaciones relacionadas con la forma en que se produjeron las elecciones, con detenciones arbitrarias, límites a la libertad de reunión y de expresión y el acceso severamente restringido a los medios de comunicación y a las redes de Internet / social de los partidos de oposición.
Somos conscientes de que los miembros de la oposición han puesto en duda la exactitud de los resultados dados a conocer por el gobierno. Instamos al gobierno a mantener un diálogo abierto con los partidos de la oposición y para hacer frente a las preocupaciones legítimas que tienen sobre éste y otros temas electorales.
Las elecciones y la democracia son algo más que la jornada electoral. El establecimiento de una comisión electoral independiente para supervisar la preparación y la celebración de elecciones y el acuerdo entre todas las partes en los procesos electorales, sobre el financiamiento y la supervisión, aumentaría la credibilidad de las futuras elecciones en Guinea Ecuatorial.
